Hello Packer Fans! It looks like Ted Thmpson might have had the best draft since the one that brought us Aaron Rodgers. With the 9th overall pick Thompson picked, 6'2" 337 lb. Nose Tackle B.J. Raji from Boston College. All the so-called draft experts had Raji going in the top 6 picks. Raji was one of the highest rated Defensive linemen in this draft. No one was more surprised than Thompson himself. But lo and behold. Ted swooped in and got his man.
Then Ted did something really out of character, HE TRADED UP!! In a deal With the Patriots he got 6'3"245 lb.Linebacker Clay Matthews from USC. It cost Thompson a 2nd round and 2 3rd picks to get Matthews with the 26th pick which goes against his reputation as " Trade Down Teddy". With his day 1 decisions Thompson addressed the glaring needs of his team. The Defense. New Defensive coordinator Dom Capers and Linebackers coach Kevin Greene probably had a lot of input in the decisions in order to get the pieces they would need to help get the new "3-4" defense kick started. Raji is expected to start in the new scheme with Ryan Pickett moving to Defensive end. Matthews is probably going to replace Brady Poppinga at starting outside linebacker if not at the start of the season it will be in the near future.
As for the rest of the 2009 picks here they are in order:
4th round J.T.Lang G/T 6'4" 316 lbs. from Eastern Michigan. All MAC 1st team 2008 2nd team in 2007
5th round Quinn Johnson FB 6'1" 250 lbs. LSU former linebacker
5th round Jamon Meredith OT 6'5" 304 lbs. South Carolina. Tackle could be a key with age and injuries catching up to Clifton and Tauscher
6th round Jarius Wynn DE 6'3" 277 lbs. Georgia. Wynn adds depth to the D-line and if he performs well could put an end to the "Justin Harrell" era
6th round Brandon Underwood CB 6'1" 198 lbs. Cincinnati. Has played safety as well as corner.
7th round Brad Jones LB 6'3" 232 lbs. Colorado.
Let's hope Ted's adventure truly is excellent and good luck to this year's draftees!
Now on to a rather disturbing rumor. "The Big Show" on WSSP-AM 1250 reports of a rumor that the Packers might be shopping All-Pro Wide Receiver Donald Driver. Now I don't know where former Packer and Lion RB Gary Ellerson gets his info but, so far nothing has surfaced to even acknowledge the rumor. Driver has been the leader of the receiving corps. for some time now. It was he who called all the receivers together the day Favre's dad died and told them "We catch whatever he throws tonight" This rumor makes this reporter a bit uneasy as I have been in contact with Dan Cary of Lammi Sports who represents Donald in his charitable events. I was looking into covering these events for Packer I.Q. and now if the rumor is true it could all be for nothing. Let's hope this is only a rumor started by an ex-jock and his cronies so we can look forward to seeing Driver in the Green and Gold this season.
That's it for now gang. Let's start getting revved up for the 2009 season and enjoy the view "From the Cheap Seats". SEE YA!!!
