Hello all of you avid football ^FAN^atics,

I am taking excerpts from a few articles post on CNN.com Website about the deceased Arizona Cardinal. Maj. Gen. Don Shepperd, USAF (Ret.), a CNN military analyst. He offers his analysis of what went wrong with the Pat Tillman case.

(CNN) -- When I was a young boy, my father told me, "Son, when you have an ethical dilemma, tell the truth no matter how much it hurts and do the honorable thing." It was good advice -- advice I carried with me throughout my military career and throughout my life.

It's also sound guidance the Pentagon should have followed in the Pat Tillman case. They could've avoided this whole mess -- investigations, accusations of cover-up and an outraged family -- by simply telling Tillman's family and the public from the outset what happened in Afghanistan on April 22, 2004.

I wrote back on 4/24/04, (Pat Tillman) was killed on 4/22/04 in Afghanistan, as he was a member of the Army Rangers. I mentioned that fellow soldiers (friendly fire) shot Tillman, thinking he was part of an enemy force firing at them. The United States Army did Pat Tillman’s family a disservice for that incident. Nine military officers, including four generals, will face "corrective action" for making critical mistakes in the aftermath of the friendly fire death of Mr. Pat Tillman. The facts are not in dispute: It was made even more complicated by the Army's original depiction of how he died, a detailed description that said he was killed in a firefight with the "well-armed enemy" while rallying his team in support of ambushed comrades. Actually he was killed by friendly fire.

Military wanted a hero to help recruitment, Pat’s Mom tells ESPN radio show
• "This was an attempt to dupe the public ... and that is immoral," she says
• Pat Tillman gave up NFL stardom to join Army after September 11 attacks

Pat’s Mom then said the military is still spinning the story for its own gain.

"The first investigative officer, in his statement to the third investigative officer, said in his opinion, there was evidence of criminal intent and he also used the term 'criminal negligence,' " Tillman said.

"Yet his report has been devalued because it doesn't go along with what they want out in the public eye."

In 2002, Pat Tillman, a professional football player for the Arizona Cardinals voluntarily gave up a $3.6 million contract in 2002 for the life of an Army Ranger. He was sent to Afghanistan. He was killed in combat. He joined the Army, a decision he said was a response to the September 11, 2001, and terrorist attacks.
