Even though the Green Bay Packers have Brett Favre in their backfield next year, the running back situation is changing. Ahman Green has just followed Samkron Gado to the Houston Texans. The 30 year old Green should become the starter in front of Dominick Williams(formerly Davis) who missed last year with a knee injury.
The Texans will announce the addition of Green to the team in a news conference tomorrow. Green has ties with former Green Bay head coach and now Houston Texan offensive coordinator Mike Sherman.
Green leaves the Packers just 46 yards shy of the Packer team rushing record of 8,207 yards which has been held for 43 years by 60s Packer great Jim Taylor. He did break the 1,000 yard mark 6 times during his seven year career which is a team record. He also holds the Packers record for total yards from scrimmage with 10,870 and his club record of 33 100 yard game.
It is obvious that there was a line drawn in the sand by Ted Thompson regarding big contract dollar amounts. It appears that the Green departure is similar to the recent departures of Packer veteran players after more money like Mike Wahle, Marco Riveria, Javon Walker, and Darren Sharper.
This leaves a big hole for the Packers to fill in the backfield. The untested Vernand Morency and flashy Noah Herron do not appear to the be the total answer in the Packer backfield. They could be looking at some of the other free agents like Travis Henry, Chris Brown, Corey Dillion and maybe Lamont Jordan. We will have to see where Thompson's dice games leads the Packer backfield. The Packers have about 21 million dollars to play the free agent game if they choose.
