Flutie Flakes?!

Hello all of you loyal Football ^FAN^atics, Hut one, hut two, hut three, hike! Those are the words that used to come out of a very memorable quarterback’s mouth last season for the New England Patriots. Flutie retired May 15, ending a 21-year football career in which the undersized Heisman Trophy winner threw one of college football's most famous passes and played a dozen seasons in the NFL. "It's just been a fun run for me," the 43-year-old Flutie said.

For the New England Patriots, for whom he threw 10 passes in five games last season. He was able to play near his home in Natick as it was close to Boston College. That is the college where he won the Heisman in 1984. Flutie spent 12 seasons in the NFL and played in the U.S. Football League and the Canadian Football League. He won the CFL's Most Outstanding Player award six times and the league's Grey Cup championship three times.

Flutie's next job will be as a college football analyst with ABC and ESPN. He'll work in the ABC studio during Saturday's college football games and on ESPN studio shows. I have said for years that he will become an analyst or just maybe a quarterback coach because he is very knowledgeable about all of football in general.

Only in the CFL, with its wide-open game, did his style of play lead to his well-known success in becoming a very good quarterback. Up in the CFL, he threw 41,355 yards and 270 touchdowns in eight seasons with British Columbia, Calgary and Toronto.

However, Patriots coach Bill Belichick stated: "His accomplishments up there are more than legendary," To me, he would be an extremely good addition to the Patriots coaching staff. Most NFL teams thought that Flutie’s short physical size was a deterrent in his ability of commanding a football team. After all, its not your physical size but the size of your heart and Doug Flutie’s had to be huge to retire after 21 years of pro football.

When Brett Favre retires, then just maybe the Green Bay Packers should hire him as their quarterback coach. With his wisdom of the football game, how teams will react to his illusive and creative game calling ability should be astounding!
