As Titletown Turns

Hey fellow Packer fans Sorry it took so long to get back to the keyboard. Just had to take some time to let last season go and to let all the off-season drama to play out. I went with a soap opera themed title for this piece because let's face it, that's what this off-season was all about.

The brave but beleaguered leader of our heroes, Mike Sherman, was run out of town by 2nd year leading man Ted Thompson. I think Sherman got a bit of a raw deal but the handwriting was on the wall. Injuries or not, Sherman had to produce in order to save his job. The tension of having the new GM in office and the tension of the old GM on the sidelines was only going to subside one of 2 ways. The parting of the ways was really the only solution.

On comes the mysterious stranger, Mike McCarthy to take over. Coach Mac is just one more off-shoot of the Mike Holmgren branch of the Bill Walsh West Coast Family tree. Good Luck Mac.

Then we had the saga of the team's true hero, Brett Favre. Will he or won't he return? Poor Brett got asked that question about every 3 seconds of his waking hours. Fox 6 TV even hustled down to Tunica with a satelite truck because of some rumor that Favre was going to make some kind of announcement at a news conference at his charity golf outing. The "news" was that there was no news! The press conference has ALWAYS been a part of this event. The news and sports media were so worried that they would have been left out of his decision that they were ready to get a reporter out to whatever corner of the world Brett might be. Maybe if the media and I mean ALL media would have just sat back and waited the decision probably wouldn't have taken so long. This guy has had so much on his plate for so long that he DESERVED all the privacy he could get.

On top of all this former Packer TE Mark Chmura sliced and diced Favre on a local radio sports show about how selfish Brett has supposedly always been. The remarks got picked up nationally. Chewy had the nerve to wonder why Brett abandoned him when he was accused of child molestation. GET A CLUE DIPSTICK!!

Why would a player of Favre's stature want to be linked to a man who goes to a high school party and allegedly forced a teenager into sexual relations? Here is my question Mark "What the hell were you doing there?!" Once you saw what was going on you should have gotten the hell out of Dodge! Talk about selfish. You had to stay around to impress a bunch of teenagers! Talk about ego! Well enough of that.

Then Javon Walker threw a temper tantrum and said he wanted out of Green Bay. Well he got his wish. Shipped out to Denver for a 2nd round pick. Ever since he started working out with T.O. he's been just as childish as the former Eagle wideout. Good Luck Coach Parcells, with T.O. in Dallas you will need it.

We lost the best kicker in franchise history and a real nice guy when Ryan Longwell signed with Minnesota. Good Luck Ryan. ( except against Green Bay that is) But now changes are coming.

The re-signing of Aaron Kampmann, Ahman Green, Najeh Davenport, and William Henderson was just the beginning. I'm not really sure about Manuel the Safety we got from Seattle, but, I am sure about Charles Woodson. If he can play injury free and return to Pro Bowl form the secondary could be awesome. The pick of A.J. Hawk from Ohio State instantly upgrades the linebacking corps. Hawk and Barnett could wreak some serious havoc.

Now all Thompson has to do is keep close eye on the June 1st cuts and see if he can provide Coach Mac  with a few more weapons to bring Green Bay back from the murky depths of last season. That's all for now my fellow Packer freaks. Keep cool. Keep the Faith and always remember ther is always room for you here in the Cheap Seats. Until next time, SEEEEEE YAAAAAA!!!!!!!
