The Packers are making the moves on draft day.  Walker stated recently that he would retire instead of playing in a Green bay Packer uniform again.   The Packers traded the disgruntled Javon Walker to the Denver Broncos for a second round pick(37th overall).   They immediately sent this pick to the Atlanta Falcons for 2nd round (47th overall), 3rd round (93rd  overall)  and 5th round pick(148th overall). This trade occurred just after trading the Packer original 2nd round (36 overall) to the New England Patriots for the 52 and  75 overall pick.  It is easy to see that the Packer Thompson is sticking to his reputation of building teams through the draft.

This comes just days after Brett Favre agreed to return to the Packers for one more year.  Favre was delaying his retirement decision to see if the Packer front office would be making moves to improve the team from the 4-12 seasons a year ago.  Since Walker was allowed to see other teams this week including the Denver Broncos and Philadelphia Eagles, Brett may have known that this move was coming even before returning to the team.  The Packers will lose their most talented playmaker wide out, but will most likely avoid any negative locker room atmosphere from his presence or the press related to Walker.  Walker had a season ending knee injury last season in the opener. This came after a 1382 yard season with 12 touchdowns in 2004.

The Packers took the wide out Greg Jennings(2nd – 52 pick) , OT Daryn Colledge(2nd - 47th pick) and Louisville OG Jason Spitz to help strengthen the offense with the recent todays loss of Walker and last years loss of the Marco Riviera and Mike Wahle.  Time will tell whether Jennings can fill at least some of the playmaking shoes of Walker.

The Packers first round pick(5th overall)  was Ohio State’s linebacker A.J. Hawk. Hawk was the 2005 Lombardi Award winner and is regarding by many as the best college defensive player last season.  This will add some need speed on the Packers defense as this linebacker can play all the linebacker positions. The addition of free agent cornerback Charles Woodson from the Oakland Raiders this week should force Ahmad Carroll to bench where he belongs. They also added Abdul Hodge from Iowa to further strengthen the Packers linebacking corps with their 3rd round(67th overall) pick.

One thing from today’s activities, the Packers are definitely rebuilding for the future. I guess we will have to wait to see what it will bring.
