Hello, I hope everyone is enjoying the new regular season. I realize that I have not written an article in quite some time and this one is my first one of this season. I also realize the Ricky Williams is not part of the NFL and/or the Green Bay Packer organization.
As we all are aware, Ricky Williams the Dolphins franchise running back let the Miami Dolphin organization down in several ways which include failing substance abuse tests and retiring from football out of the blue. This left the Dolphin organization with no time to change their draft game plan for a replacement. Recently, the Ricky Williams camp decided that is was acceptable not only to breach his contract by leaving football, but also felt it was unfair that they re-pay the $8.6 million dollars signing bonus for not holding up their end of the bargain. This sounds like the classic tale of the battle of the little guy (Williams) against the big “deep pocketed” and “unfair” organization (Dolphins). Poor Poor Ricky Williams… How is he going to hang out in Asia and afford that great dope now?
Well, when I was a kid, I was taught that there were always consequences for your actions and you must always fulfill your commitments that you make in life. If you touched a stove, you would burn your hand. If you wanted a pet dog, you walked the dog and cleaned the poop. If you played youth football, this privilege required you to get good grades in school and do chores around the house. You not only committed to the above but also you never let your team mates down by not practicing or showing up for games. These teammates were counting you.
As adult, we all continue honoring our commitments much the same way. In the work place if you do not perform your responsibilities and let down your team, your services will no longer be necessary. Right now, my biggest commitment is to my wife and daughter. When Sophia was born, I did not sign a written contract worth millions of dollars but I made a commitment that is more long term that any football contract. I am now under “contract” with the Jackle family team playing the position of father. This contract will always be honored no matter what our family future holds.
In the workplace, we have certain rules that all of must follow in order participate in our chosen profession. The NFL is not the only organization that performs drug tests. It is just in real life outside of football you would lose your job and maybe serve jail time.
Ricky, welcome to the real world my friend.
This year you chose the following:
1) Break the substanc
e abuse policy when playing football again
2) Retire from the game of football
3) Breach your contract with the Dolphins.
Here are the consequences of your actions:
1) No NFL team or football fan will ever look up or trust you again.
2) Based on today’s arbitrator Richard Bloch ruling, you must repay $8,616,353 in bonus money by not holding up your end of the bargain.
3) Failed on your commitment to the teammates that blocked for you when you were successful in the game.
Thank you Ricky for leaving football and hopefully leaving the media spotlight so families out there will not mistakenly look up to you.
If you noticed that I did not mention Mike McKenzie in the same breath as Williams. Though I do not agree with what Mike is doing this year, he has paid his fines and fulfilling his commitment to the Packers and his fellow teammates for now.
