In memory of Irv, A very memorable game

On a night when most of us would not have been able to put our own personal sorrow behind us, Brett Favre did just that and played a game that would have made his late father Irv so very proud. It was their shared love of the game that made the decision a little easier , although, not any less painful for Brett. Reports came out of several sources that the Favre family had told Brett to do what his father would have wanted him to do, play the game. And play he did. Favre was 22 of 30 for 399 yds, 4 tds, no turnovers, and an incredible 154.9 passer rating. A perfect rating is 158.3. Pretty amazing for a guy who's heart was broken into a million pieces just about 24 hours earlier. The receivers made plays that should be highlight material for years to come. And although Javon Walker had a monster game, the wealth was shared by 12, count 'em, 12 different receivers. It made me proud to be a Packer fan when you see how everyone just rallied around Favre in his time of need. Even many of the Raider players, staff and even the Raider fans went out of their way to show their support. A class act if ever in all my years of watching pro sports I saw one.

As for the game itself.it just goes to show what a difference a year makes. Last season Oakland rolled through the regular season and the AFC playoffs to make it to the Super Bowl. This year with devastating injuries all over the roster and with time catching up with most of the star players Oakland went nowhere fast. You have to wonder what is the plan for next season with this once proud franchise.Do you plug and patch and hope for the best or do you tear it down and rebuild it? I agree with John Madden when he says it's time to rebuild. Jerry Rice is THE greatest receiver in the history of the game, but has been in the league for 19 years. Tim Brown 15. You have 2 quarterbacks that are well past their prime in Gannon and Rob Johnson. (if Johnson ever had a prime). Now you can see why the Pack and almost every other opponent has had their way with the Raiders. Green Bay's offense racked up 555 yds total offense, 5 tds, and ran away with time of possesion. The defense sacked all 3 Oakland qbs, forced 2 fumbles and had 2 picks. KGB had 3 sacks alone! And what a nice job done by Michael Hawthorne filling in for the injured Mike McKenzie. Those 2 picks were his including the one on 2nd and goal that turned away a Raider scoring threat. Now it's back home to face the playoff bound Denver Broncos. Too many things can happen to keep Green Bay out of the playoffs but losing this game would cinch that.

And now all my fellow Packer fans, I would like to take this time on behalf of myself, my lovely wife Carol, and Twinkles the cat to wish you all ................. HAPPY HOLIDAYS " FROM THE CHEAP SEATS'..........PEACE.
