Brett Favre went into Sunday night’s game with a career 2-9 record at the Metro Dome. It did not help matters that his right thumb was broken two weeks ago in the game against the St Louis Rams. Favre threw for 18 of 28 for 194 yards with 3 touchdown passes and one interception. It has been some time since I have seen Favre this fired up. As far I am concerned the play of the game for Favre was is roll block that took out two Viking defenders on a running play in the second half. Brett Favre was patient in the pocket and showed no ill effects of the cracked right thumb. Knowing the Packers season was on the line, Brett came to play. I have not seen this much emotion from Favre in quite some time. With the Packers 30 -27 win, Brett Favre tied Johnny Unitas for fourth place on the all-time win list for quarterbacks.
Favre’s efforts were not the complete story in this game. The Packers showed that balance on offense is the key to winning NFL football games by rushing for 261 net yards and passing for 190 net yards. Ahman Green rushed for 137 yards in 21 attempts for a 6.52 yards per carry average. Backups Tony Fisher and Najeh Davenport contributed with 38 yards and 43 yards respectively. Besides their yardage Davenport and Green did not put the ball of the ground which has plagued the Packers this season. This rushing effort freed Favre up to do his magic in the passing game.
I thought the Packers score could have been higher than what was put on the board. On three occasions, the Packers had to settle for a field goal in the red zone. I did not think it was because the Vikings defense shut the Packers down but it was more the conservative play calling by the offense coordinator. You could tell by the look of Favre’s face when he left the field on these three occasions that he agreed with me. When the Packers are playing an explosive team like the Minnesota Vikings, the Packers need to go for the jugular and put the ball in the end zone. It was almost like Tom Rossley was happy with three points instead of 6.
The win moves the Packers to a .500 record two games behind the Vikings in the NFC North. The Packers will play the improving Eagles and their former division nemesis Tampa Bay in the next two games. I hope the Packers play with the same fire for these games.
