After watching the Packers pathetic performance against the Vikings, I find it hard to be optimistic about this season. There are just too many holes and too many mistakes being made for a successful season. First off let’s start with safety, without a healthy Darren Sharper the Packers are in trouble. To have Edwards and Anderson both starting at safety, the Packers secondary will get torched every game. Next hole on the list is where Joe Johnson is positioned. He’s positioned at defensive end and that’s about it. He has been a total bust for the money he is being paid. The next problem is the condition of the players. There has to be a serious flaw in the way the players stretch before practice and before games. There are too many pulled hamstrings and groin injuries happening. Either the muscles are being worked too much or they aren’t doing the proper stretching in warm ups. It seems like the same problems from last year still exist, the Packers are being out coached. The game plans are horrible to put it plainly. I know the execution of these plays have been poor by the players, but some things there aren’t any excuse for. A perfect example of this is abandoning the screen pass for the shovel pass. At one time the Packers were the best screen pass team in the league, now it’s non-existent. It will only be a matter of time before one of these shovel passes bounces into the hands of a defensive lineman. My advice is to stick with what works best. Now comes to the part that hurts the most, the play of Brett Favre. Brett has been a favorite of everyone in Packerland since he’s been here, but he’s not the player he once was. Sure he still has the rocket arm and will throw a block if you need him too, but it appears his better days are behind him. He no longer steps up in the pocket to fire a strike to a receiver. More and more he backs up from the oncoming rush and throws wobbling passes off his back foot. Teams are using more 8 man fronts against the Packers, because they don’t think Favre can beat them by passing anymore. This was clearly evident against the Vikings this past Sunday, three points scored at the half. If you disagree with my statements, ask yourself this question. When was the last “big game” Brett Favre played great in? It certainly wasn’t against the Rams a couple years ago. It wasn’t last year against the Bucs, or against the Jets, and it wasn’t against the Falcons either. In all fairness to him, I’ll admit that the talent around him and the play calling has not been good. I just feel that Favre constantly makes too many mistakes. I admire everything Brett has done and the way he played the game, but let’s face it; he’s not the same. Until next time, Stay Safe!
