Here’s an Idea…

Every year when September 1st rolls around, some excellent football players are sent packing. How about this… next time a team goes bust in the NFL, or the next time the league is ready to add another couple of teams, let’s create a team for the guys who get cut. Let them have a bye the first week of play to get their game together, then put them on the field. America loves a comeback story. We all love a good Cinderella story, pull for the underdog, and the Vegas odds-makers will have a heyday.

The team would be a publicly owned company, and every fan who buys in gets a vote. We hire a coach and staff, the best bunch of has-beens we can find, and then we wait for September 1st each year. While the rest of the league trims their rosters, we will fill ours up with the best unemployed players the league has to offer. Bring us your old, your injured, your unstable. We will uniform them, pay them the league minimum, and watch them play their hearts out!

Every game would be a matter of pride and revenge. The only guys on the team would really want to be there, just to play the game and prove they still have what it takes. It would be the size of the heart and not the size of the wallet that would make this team special. Would they win? Sometimes… I mean as long as teams like the Bengals, Lions, Cardinals, and Texans are still playing, they should do better than the Panthers did in 2001, right?

Consider this, if this team was in place today, we would have players like Neil O’Donnell, Frank Winters, Robert Edwards, Dedric Ward, Marcus Jones, Tony Semple, Ki-Jana Carter, and Danny Wuerffel to choose from… all are/were great players and probably have a season or two left in them.

…just a thought.
