It's been 3 days since the Super Bowl and the coaching changes are back in full swing with Lions Head Coach Marty Morhningweg being the latest casualty. In all 5 coaches have been given the axe including Steve Marriucci in Frisco,Dave Campo in Dallas, Dick LeBeau in Cincinnati, and Tom Coughlin in Jacksonville.Of the 5 opennings 2 have already been filled. Former Carolina assistant Jack Del Rio has assumed the top job in Jacksonville and Bill(the Tuna) Parcells taking over the Cowboys.Del Rio was an excellent All-Pro linebacker during his career and from all reports he is just as good at coaching. Although he has no head coaching experience , Del Rio could be a force to be reckoned with if he brings the same intensity to coaching as he did playing. Good Luck Jack. The most curious hiring is that of Parcells in Dallas. Parcells is as big a control freak as you could ever find in a head coach which makes this reporter wonder " how in the hell is he going to be able to do what he wants with Jerry Jones as owner?" Jones is to owning a team as Parcells is to coaching one. Jones had one of the most successful coaches in the world in Jimmy Johnson and he let him go because he couldn't swallow the fact that everyone attributed all the Cowboys success to Johnson. Talk about your overblown hurting little ego getting in the way! Anyone who knows or knows of Bill Parcells Knows that he will not tolerate ANY interference from ANYBODY when it comes to coaching his team. If he wants certain players you damn well better get them.Or at least die trying.I for one can't wait to see how long it's going to take before there is a blow up of nuclear proportion in the skies over Dallas. There is further speculation that Tampa defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin will be the next 49er Head coach and Marriucci will be offered the job in Detroit.
But what about this scenario? What if Mike Sherman offered Marriucci the asisstant head coaching job in Green Bay? Before you have me commited to the funny farm hear me out. Mooch comes to Green Bay and is reunited with good buddy Brett Favre which in turn makes Favre a very happy puppy. This will probably extend Brett's stay in Green Bay another season or 2. During this time Sherman and Mooch set out to find the heir apparent to Favre so that when Favre retires Sherman can turn over the reins to Marriucci and just be the G.M. thus making the transition from the Brett Favre era to whoever replaces him go smoother than silk. The new qb would have been groomed for the job by the best possible people he could be associated with. What would it be like if you could be shown the ropes by 3 time MVP Brett Favre, one of the best qb coaches the Pack ever had in Marriucci, and a very good head coach like Mike Sherman. You very well could be the next great Packer quarterback. But as for now this is only a dream. But sometimes dreams do come true. One can only imagine the possiblity.
