Disappointing end to a great season

I know the title of this article may have you wondering why I would call this past season great, but, read along and I think you will agree. For a team that #1 replaced it's entire starting receiving corps. #2 went right on winning despite numerous injuries especially to the offensive line and #3 played with the distraction of the possible retirement of their sure first ballot Hall Of Fame Quarterback and I think that a 12-5 season is more than what we could have expected. Yes it would have been awesome to see the Packers go all the way and win it all. But deep down I think we all knew that given the 3 reasons I stated it would have taken a bit of a miracle to acheive.Brett Favre had an MVP season despite the outcome of the vote. Had he been given the same tools as MVP Rich Gannon I think the Pack would have come close to that seemingly impossible task of the perfect season. But from what I saw this season the pieces of a championship team is coming together. Donald Driver has got to be the "Feel Good" story of the season. If any of you had read the Sports Illustrated story by Rick Reilly you would have known what this young man has overcome to be a top flight NFL receiver. From a troubled youth to being the Packers #1 receiver is definetly a case study in what can happen when you take the 2nd chance given you and never give up no matter the odds.Way to go Donald! How about undrafted free agent RB Tony Fisher? A player nobody really wanted but did an admirable job. Fisher has proven he belongs in the league. Nice job Tony! Along with the good there is the bad. Darren Sharper has got to put the team ahead of his ego. Had he not gotten hurt against Buffalo he may have been the diffrence in the Jets game which could have gave Green Bay the #1 seed and a 1st round bye.The play of the special teams was no where near up to par. Poor punt and kick-off coverage. No return game whatsoever. And that brain fart against Atlanta when Simoneau came untouched to block the punt for a td was inexcusable for a play-off team. Well now that the Pack is off until training camp(except for their Pro Bowlers) it's time to kick back and relax. Maybe take in some of the play-off action and the Super Bowl. But when the season is over Mike Sherman and the entire organization will have to address their needs for the 2003 season. #1. Middle Linebacker, Hardy Nickerson didn't have a bad season but he was not like the Hardy of old. Get in someone Nickerson can work with to be the MLB of the future.#2 Quarterback.(this becomes #1 IF Favre retires). Get someone that can come in and lear n from Brett so he too can be ready to take the reins when Brett finally does hang it up.#3 Kick returner. This was the most glaring weakness of special teams. It's awful hard to drive the field when you start at or behind your 20 yard line.#4 Back-up QB. Doug Pederson is a heck of a nice guy but he's not my 1st choice as a field general. This could be a golden opprotunity for Craig Nall IF he studies hard all off season and comes in to camp ready to show the coaching staff he deserves the #2 spot. After that,a decent pass rusher, wide receiver,or back-up linemen depending on who is available. Defensive coordinators around the league are going to be spending a lot of long nights trying to figure out how to stop Falcon QB Michael Vick. As much as I hate to admit it, Vick has been incredible. He changes defenses the way that Randy Moss did when he first came in. So here is to the greatest Pro team ever...THE GREEN BAY PACKERS!! Have a great off season and get well for the next. And here is to ALL OF YOU WHO READ PACKER I.Q.!! I had a great time being part of this again this season and look forward to the next. I will probably be writing during the Play-offs and the off-season. I hope you enjoyed reading my articles as much as I have enjoyed writing them for you. Keep yourselves safe.
