The Green Bay Packers with their 24-10 win over the Miami Dolphins at Lambeau field puts them with the best record (7-1) in the NFL going into week 10 of the 2002-2003 season. A special thanks goes out to the New York Jets for pounding the San Diego Chargers 44-13 on Sunday to allow the Packers to be the only team with one loss in the NFL.
The bye week was good for the Green Bay, Favre, equipped with the knee brace to protect his sprained knee, looked like the same Favre that we Packer fans and football fans have grown to admire and love. Can you say MVP? Except for an errant throw in the end zone during the first quarter that led to a Patrick Surtain interception, Favre was pretty much flawless. Favre went 16 for 25 for 187 yards with one touchdown.
Favre was not the main key to this game where the Packers dominated the AFC East leading Miami Dolphins. Ahman Green made this presence felt on the offense side of the ball with 143 total yards ( 72 yards running and 71 yards receiving and 2 TDs). The balanced offensive attack of passing and rushing is keeping opposing defenses on their heels so far this season.
The main story last night was the Packer defense. Darren Sharper returned an interception for 89 yards for a touchdown. Nate Wayne forced a fumble, recovered fumble, and intercepted a pass to help take the air out the Dolphin’s offensive sail. Tyrone Williams forced another fumble which added a plus 4 overall to the Packer’s leading 27 take-ways ( 14 interceptions and 13 fumble recoveries). Defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila had 2-1/2 sacks and is second behind Carolina’s Julius Peppers for the NFL sack lead with 7.5 sacks for the year. The defense secondary did not allow the return to the NFL of Chris Carter impact the game. Early in the first quarter, the Packers forced a fumble on one of Carter’s first receptions as a Dolphin and pretty much took Carter out of the game. The Packer’s defensive big plays never let the Dolphin offense to get of the ground.
This victory puts the Packers 4 games ahead of the second place Detroit Lions in the NFC North going into week 10. The Packers could increase their lead to 5 games when they face the Detroit Lions in Green Bay this week.
