Special teams tame Panthers

After a sluggish first half, the Packers received some help from their special teams. The Packers took advantage of two fumbles on back-to-back kickoffs by Carolina return man Steve Smith to break open a close game. K.D Williams and “Whisper” Goodman turned in outstanding efforts on special teams, great job! Williams displayed some fine tackling and Goodman downed a punt at the Panther one-yard line. The Packers also made some good adjustments on offense by calling some screen passes and using Bubba Franks to off set the Panther defense. The Panthers were determined to stop the Packer running attack with the use of some run stunts and bringing a safety closer to the line of scrimmage. This opened up passes for Bubba and Ahman as the Packer offense got back on track.

The defensive scheme and a terrible playing surface attributed to slow start for the Packers offense, but better field position and solid offensive line play got the chains moving. There were just clumps of turf all over which made things a bit difficult for both teams to move the ball. The Packer defense had a little bit of luck on their side as a Mushin Muhammad touchdown was called back due to a holding penalty against Todd Stuessie. I thought the call was a little bit questionable at best, and it could have put the Packers down 14-0. Also on a forth and fourteen Mohammed dropped a pass that would have given the Panthers a first down inside the Packer five yard line. I am still trying to figure out how Mohammed was so wide open on a forth-down pass? But on a positive note, the “Beer Man” had two more sacks and Bill Schroeder made a great catch for his lone touchdown of the day.

Well next week the Pack travels to Tampa for which should be a defensive battle, and a win could give the Packers control of their division. Well just when I thought I have seen it all, Favre just goes another step further. With Brett chased from the pocket, he gave linebacker Dan Morgan a stiff arm for the ages. The amazing thing about it is that due to the strength and toughness of Favre, Morgan left the game with a broken leg. Until next time, have a great and safe week everyone!
