I have been a devoted Packer fan for a little over 30 years. I have stuck by them through all the 4 and 5 win seasons in the past. But I never was ashamed of them until now; the Carolina game was the last straw. It is one thing to lose because the other team has more talent, but last Monday was another story. I am convinced that our secondary is just a bunch of cowards (to put it nicely)! They avoid hard contact when ever possible; there is no other reason why the tackling is that poor every week. Mike Sherman has to be to held accountable for this, just like Rhodes was. You can’t tell me that he has installed toughness on the football team this year. I could hang clocks on the wall and take the players bowling! He has that “deer in the headlight look” constantly on the sidelines and has not produced what he was hired to do.
Ron Wolf has some big holes to fill in the draft next April. He needs three defensive backs that can tackle as well as cover, two defensive ends that can rush the passer. As much as I like Holliday and Thierry for their toughness, they are average at best. Bernardo Harris plays a solid middle linebacker, but only when he is not blocked. I have never seen him take on a guard, toss him aside, and make a tackle. I watch Brian Urlacher(Bears rookie), and then I watch Harris, and I get sick to my stomach. This also would be a good time to let Whale try playing guard for a while and see what he can do. And bring Heimberger into the lineup to play the other guard; Rivera and Verba get pushed around way to easily to be starters in the league. Did anyone see that great effort Freeman gave on the interception before halftime? Why is he still playing? I realize the receivers have dropped too many passes on Favre, but Brett has got to be more accurate than he is. There is a saying “you can’t teach and old dog new tricks” Favre is a perfect example of it. He still has not learned how to throw the ball away when he is outside of the pocket. I would really think twice before extending his contract, Favre has seen his better days! If Ron Wolf has any thought of trading Hasslebeck for high draft picks, he is making a huge mistake for two reasons: his top picks have all been a bust and Favre can’t remain healthy for too much longer. If you look at the new breed of quarterbacks in the league, they showcase great mobility and good arm strength. Hasslebeck has the mobility and the arm strength, but he has more intelligence than the younger quarterbacks in the league.
I have cancelled on family functions (weddings, christenings, etc.) in years past, on Sundays when the Packers were playing. I have put watching the green and gold ahead of my family and the friends in my life. I will never put "these Packers" at the top of my list again. To put Antonio Freeman ahead of my family and friends makes me just as big of a loser as he is. I will probably write again before the end of the year, but if I don’t, you will know why!
