With Charles Haley, Fred Dean, and Ronnie Lott all retired, the Packers were finally able to get their offense on track this past Sunday. Ryan Longwell kicked a 35-yard field goal with 54 seconds left to give the Packers a 31-28 victory over the 49ers. Brett Favre looked like a MVP quarterback on Sunday by showing mobility and setting his feet before letting his passes fly. Favre was able to do what he does best, and that is improvising. Brett finally put the ball down and ran for yardage rather than throwing into double coverage. Favre scrambled and hit Freeman in stride, which enabled Freeman to turn up field for the Packers first score. It appeared Brett was past the line of scrimmage on the play, but the play was not reviewed.

The Packers did attempt two deep passes to Schroeder, but despite good efforts from Bill, the passes were incomplete. By attempting theses deep passes, the offense was able to stretch the 49er secondary, which helped the Green Bay receivers on the shorter routes. The 49er receivers took advantage of mismatches to score three touchdowns against the Green Bay defense. Charlie Garner made a great catch for the 49er’s first score by taking advantage of Bernardo Harris on a sideline pattern. Terrell Owens made his presence felt with two short crossing patterns for touchdowns. On these three plays the 49ers had their receivers against linebackers, a huge mismatch in favor of the 49ers. An excellent job by Mariucci to set up these mismatches, not bad for a “yes man”. Hopefully in the future the Packers defense will be able to defend the crossing pattern better

Chad Clifton, Santana Dotson, and Bubba Franks gave solid performances in the victory over the 49ers. I thought the effort given by Ahman Green was nothing short of an A+. Green showed determination and strength at the 49er goal line, which ended up in a touchdown for Packers. If Ahman can hold on to the ball better, the Packers have an absolute steal. Fred Vinson to Seattle for Ahman Green, good job Mr. Wolf. The Pack will be off next week, so the wounded can get healthy for the second half of the season. I don’t want to ruin the Green Bay victory, but remember Packer Backers, this was the NFL’s worst defense.
