The following sample football game with various final scores is used to illustrate how the "NFL Teams Against the Spread" standings are created above:
Suppose the Green Bay Packers are the favorite against the Chicago Bears by -3 points at Lambeau field.
Packers 21 Bears 17.
With the spread at –3, the favored Green Bay Packers beat the Chicago Bears by more that 3 points. An “As Favorite” Win would be tallied above for the Packers, and an “As Underdog” lost would be tallied for the Bears.
Packers 20 Bears 17.
With the spread at –3, the favored Green Bay Packers beat the Chicago Bears by only 3 points which ties the spread. An “As Favorite” Tie would be tallied above for the Packers, and an “As Underdog” Tie would be tallied for the Bears.
Packers 16 Bears 14
With the spread at –3, the favored Green Bay Packers beat the Chicago Bears by only 2 points that is less than the spread. An “As Favorite” Loss would be tallied above for the Packers, and an “As Underdog” Win would be tallied for the Bears.
Packers 14 Bears 16
With the spread at –3, the favored Green Bay Packers lost to the Chicago Bears by 2 points. Since the “Favorite” ( Packers in this case) lost the game, the spread becomes irrelevant. An “As Favorite” Loss would be tallied for the Packers and an “As Underdog” Win would be tallied for the Bears.
