I made my annual trip to the Green Bay for the annual Midwest Shrine Game. Weather was great, beer was cold and brats were hot. I have had a little time to think about the results. The defence came up with some turnovers to seal the game, however they are weak up the middle. They gave up three rushing touchdowns right up the middle. The word out of Green Bay today is that they are in no rush to bring back Gilbert Brown. That may be a mistake if this continues.
It was amazing to see 4 7th round draft picks contribute in a big way. Charles Lee, right tackle Mark Tauscher, running back Rondell Mealey and linebacker Eugene McCaslin all contributed significantly in the first pre-season game. Charles Lee caught a 32 yard touchdown, Tauscher played the first half and did not do anything to hurt the pack. Rondell Mealey had a touchdown and 67 yards rushing. McCaslin contributed on special teams.
My major concern is with Favre. He did not look that impressive in his two series of work. I guess I should reserve judgement until after the pre-season. Hasselback is proving that he is "Mr August".
All in all a typical first pre-season game. It is always fun to watch the young guys perform and hope that they will show some spark. By far the most glowing weakness with the team is the Packers linebackers. We need help.
Green Bay again proved to be the premier football city in the nation. Another sell out. I watched a couple of other games and the stands were empty. I bet there are more fans at a Texas high school game then were at the Giant/Bear game or at the Denver/Arizona game. Way to go New York, So Arizona you want a new Stadium, Good Luck Arizona stick with golf.
