I'm very skeptical of Ted Thompson. It's a stance that I know the majority of big Packer fans share. Sometimes he looks brilliant. For example, the Gado for Morency trade and resigning Kampman. Other times it's just baffling. So far, after word broke that Ahman Green signed a 4 year, $23 Million contract with Houston (Mike Sherman) I'm baffled.
Right now, the starting RB for your 2006 Green Bay Packers is Vernand Morency. While I think he was an absolute steal for Sam Gado last season, our backfield consists of Morency and Noah Herron. That's it.
So what is Thompson's next move? At age 30, Green's almost $6 million per year will certainly inflate some other Free Agent RB contracts. But wait...almost every single one of the mind numbing 'Mock Drafts' have the Packers picking Marshawn Lynch at #16. That is until recently. With Lynch being the solid #2 Running Back in the draft, his stock will most likely rise before it falls, and he is already popping up as a possible selection for the Bills in the #12 slot. Not that going into the season with Lynch, Morency and Herron would soothe any anxiety.
Ahman was a workhorse for the Pack since he arrived in 1999. He runs like a back 20 pounds heavier and 3 inches taller. Has he lost a step or two? Of course. Is he injury prone? Any player can go down at any time. But TT has put the Pack in a very awkward position suddenly. I'm very curious what he offered Ahman; perhaps 3 years, $13 million. 5 years, $18 million maybe? We may never know, but if it was that ego of his that let a few million dollars cost us our stability in the running game, it could also cost us the season. I know this isn't the most responsible thing to say regarding the cap, but we could have afforded a few extra million to keep #30 in Titletown.
So let's see what Teddy does. Will he save a few million dollars when he signs a veteran FA to a shorter contract, then use a 2nd or 3rd rounder to get a mid-tier RB? Michael Bush of Louisville could end up being a steal after the 1st Round. Let's hope TT can figure it out.
No matter what he does now, the Green Bay backfield will look different and filled with uncertanty as we enter the 2007 season.
