Benched Owens Choose Favre Over McNabb

Earlier in the week, Philadelphia Eagle vocal wide receiver Terrell Owens made some controversial comments regarding his team’s record would be 7-0 had they had a quarterback Brett Favre over Donavan McNabb. He stated Favre was a “warrior” who plays through his injuries and how Favre’s knowledge about the quarterback position would have the Eagles in “a better position.” His comments were prompted by the Eagles organization not recognizing his 100 career touchdown reception a couple of weeks ago. Though an announcement was made  in the press box, Owens’s accomplishment did not make the video screen in the stadium. Owens is the sixth wide receiver in NFL history to achieve this 100 TD mark.

It is hard to tell who Owens’s preferred quarterback is when in the past he has made statements that he would rather play with Peyton Manning over any quarterback in the league and last year he continued to praise McNabb following the seasons with the San Francisco 49ers until after last years Super Bowl loss. He defended his Favre comments this week as merely agreeing with his friend and football analyst Michael Irvin.

It would be hard to believe that Owens actually believes that his success is not only based on his own merits but actually has something to do with talents of other members on his team. Last I checked a good quarterback can make or break a wide receiver and the success of a team. I have never heard that a good wide receiver leads teams to the Super Bowl.

On Friday, Owens made a forced public apology which he stated he had a conversation with the Eagles organization and understands that the organization does not recognize individual accomplishments. He apologized for offending his team mates and the organization.

To show their gratitude for the apology and the negative comments about the team, today the Eagles have suspended Owens for conduct detrimental to his team. According to the NFL collective bargaining agreement, the team can suspend a player for 4 games for conduct detrimental to his team. If the Eagles choose to fine Owens, he stands to lose approximately 192,000 dollars a game. Many football analysts already would be surprised if Owens plays another game in an Eagles uniform.
