Tough times, tough decisions for the Pack

Last Sunday was a brutal loss for the Packers. Not only did they lose a game they should have won, but they lost Ahman Green for the season as well. Ahman’s quad injury will take almost a year to heal, which means his days as a Packer might be over. Green is a free agent after this year, so I doubt he will have an offer after a serious knee injury. Getting back to the game, the Packers were outplayed and especially out coached by a man who was dumb enough to scalp his Super Bowl tickets. On the Packer’s game tying drive, the Pack had a chance to take a shot at the endzone and end the game. Instead of trying to take a shot , Sherman plays conservative by calling a running play, in the shotgun no less! Forget about the fact that it was a terrible call, the ball was snapped prematurly and was almost fumbled. If you are going to run the ball, do it with Favre under center. My guess is that Sherman wanted to set up the field goal attempt in the center of the field. Here’s an idea Sherman, call a play action pass and try and get the ball to Martin or Lee down the seam of the defense. Being that Ryan (it’s never my fault) Longwell missed two field goals earlier, a game tying kick would not be a guarantee. You’re on the road, it’s the Vikings, and your team is 1-4, what do you have to lose? Worse case scenario you lose and are 1-5, which you are now anyway, no guts Sherman!

After the game winning kick, the camera showed a heart broken Brett Favre on the sideline. I have to admit, I felt terrible for him. I know I have been highly critical on Favre, especially earlier this year. Sometimes we expect the most out of the people we like the most. I am guilty about feeling that way about #4. What’s going to happen to Brett now? The team is decimated by injuries; they are trying out street free agents to fill roster spots. The Packers are even considering signing Freddie Mitchell, yes the 4th and 26 Freddie Mitchell. They are 1-5, countless injuries, having the Bengals and Steelers next on the schedule, the season is over for the Pack. The thing to do for the best interest of the team is to give Rodgers playing time at quarterback. Considering Brett’s streak and the fact that he’s playing well, what happens to Brett? He can’t end his career like this, but the Packers have to think about their future. Here is a scenario that I am hoping will happen, it’s far fetched but hear me out. The Packers finish out the season with Brett keeping his streak in tact, and having a record of 4-12. That might give them a top 5-draft pick. Then try and trade up to get Reggie Bush from USC, Reggie will replace Ahman as the starting running back. Next, hope that the Lions finish a game better in the won/loss column. That will probably mean that Matt Millen and Steve Mariucci will be fired. Now for the good part, fire Sherman and hire Mariucci. Reuniting Mariucci with Favre will get the fire back in Brett. Last but not least, get some decent free agents to add stability to the team. When Brett retires after a couple more years, Rodgers will still have some weapons on offense to start his career with. I can dream can’t I?

Until next time, STAY SAFE!
