Penalties and poor offense pummel Pack 17-3

It appears that once again under Mike Sherman the Packers will get off to a bad start. I guess history does have a way of repeating itself. It was the same as in previous years; penalties and terrible play calling led to defeat. The play calling was as bland as the food of an ulcer patient. Even to the casual Packers fan, it was obvious that Tom Rossley was back calling the plays. It was the same pass patterns play after play. It seemed the receivers would either run straight downfield or fake that and stop. Not many crossing patterns, no rollouts, no rythym at all, all the signs of a Rossley offense! The Packers did try a “pump and go”, but Favre missed a wide-open Javon Walker. The play would have worked if not for the poor throw, but the Packers didn’t even try it again. It was later reported that Javon Walker would miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury. I was surprised to see the offensive line do such a poor job in pass protection, not to mention inexcusable penalties! I thought they would hold their own in pass protection, my mistake!

On a more positive note, the defense and special teams did a pretty good job. I was particularly impressed with the run defense and the tackling, something the Packers have been lacking in past seasons. Jim bates had his defense prepared to play a good game, while Tom Rossley did not! I thought the Packers did a good job of disguising their blitzes and their cornebacks did a good job of covering the Loins receivers. Ahmad Carroll had another penalty filled game. In all fairness to Carroll, some of the calls were very questionable! Ahmad has the reputation of using his hands and I think that has given the officals something to watch for more closely.

Do to his issues of the hurricane, I won’t rip into Favre. I am sure anyone who watched the game would know what my comments would be… On ESPN countdown this past Sunday the panel brought up some interesting thoughts regarding the Packers. They discussed the possibility of the Packers purposly pushing Favre into retirement? The reasons were the number one pick of Aaron Rodgers, letting Rivera and Whale leave in free agency, and no defensive free agents signed. Considering the recent pathetic performances in the playoffs by Favre, they raise a good point! Just something to think about…. Until next time, STAY SAFE!
