Still Just Preseason. . .

The Packers looked a little rough on Friday night during the Family Night scrimmage against the Buffalo Bills, but just remember that this is only preseason. It's too soon to start to panic.

Yes, the team looked pretty rough but there were a lot of contributing factors for that and hopefully most will be straightened out by the end of camp. I know there were a lot of questions to be answered this year, and more popped up at the conclusion of the scrimmage on Friday night.

But the main reasons to take into account for the lackluster showing was there were a lot of players injured and who didn't play. And the inexperience didn't help matters, either.

Offensive line coach Larry Beightol has his guys on a rotation so he can evaluate them with the #1 group. Which means the starters we saw on Friday night might not be the starters for the season. Whomever's turn it was to work with the #1 group got the start for the Family Night outing. Remember, it's still only practice. Everybody's working on their timing.

So between injuries and inexperience, the Bills' tough defense had a feast on the offense. But I did notice that the Bills' blitzed on almost every play, too. That makes it that much harder for guys not used to playing with each other to pick up their blocking assignments. The constant pressure had the offense rattled and it showed. None of the quarterbacks, including Favre, had an impressive showing against Buffalo's defense. It didn't help that Ahman Green was out due to injury and then Davenport suffered an ankle injury that took him out of the scrimmage early. The Packers found themselves real thin at running back and that's something they'll need to address quickly seeing how they have their first preseason game coming up on Thursday against San Diego.

On the defensive side of the ball, the absence of some starters crippled the Packers. Youth and injury once again made things difficult for the team and the Bills are no slouches, folks. They put together a good year last year and are expected to have even a better year this year. So practicing against them was tough all the way around. Everybody knew the Packers were going to need some work this season and if nothing else, Friday night proved that.

The only bright spot, if you can call it that, for the Packers on Family Night was punter BJ Sanders. He looked much improved from his last Family Night last year when he tanked everything. Friday night in front of the sell out crowd at Lambeau, not to mention the television audience, he had a couple of good punts, with several landing inside the 20. The coaches seemed pleased with his progress even though Sherman said he still might bring in a veteran this summer to test young Sanders. Nobody wants Sanders to succeed more than Sherman so he's going to do whatever it takes to make that happen.

So keep in mind, going into this season, we all knew this year the Packers were going to need a lot of help, and for their players to step up and do well in order for them to have a successful season. But to panic now is a little too early. That's what I hate about preseason, usually they're never a good yardstick to whether the team will have a winning season or not. It's really tough to judge a team's potential during the steamy days of summer training camp. Let's wait and see where the Packers are at come Thanksgiving.

Until next time, Keep Driving Forward.
