Grady Jackson did report to the mandatory meeting on Wednesday night. On Thursday, He met with general manager Ted Thompson and VP of Player Finance Andrew Brandt to tell them he does not want to play in Green Bay anymore.
He requested that the Packers either trade or cut him citing his displeasure with his current contract as the main reason for this request. He feels he is in the top 10 defensive run stopping tackles and does not get paid like his peers Sam Adams, Ted Washington, and Pat Williams. Thompson and Brandt refused this request. He feels that the Packers refusal to upgrade his contract after playing hurt last year was a slap in his face. Grady’s most recent contract was a two year 2.31 million dollar signed at the end of the 2003 season. The main reason he decided to report to camp was the daily fine of $6000 that he would receive for every day he held out.
Jackson was repeatedly asked if he would give less than 100 % given his feelings that the Packer organization does not respect him. Each time he said no. He is going to play for himself this year in hopes his performance on the field will spark interest by another team at the end of the season when he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
Thompson preferred not to address the private conversation he had with Grady Jackson. He thought that Jackson would be a productive player for the Packers this season and both Jackson and Walker would give 100 % on the field.
According to the JSOnline newspaper article , Jackson wants out:
"Don't get me wrong, I'm not unhappy with the Packers," Jackson said. "It's with upstairs, it's not the Packers. (It's) the business side I'm unhappy with. It's not my teammates and this and that. It's just from the business."
