After watching the Monday night debacle against Tennessee I , for one , can only shake my head and wonder what in the hell is going on here?! You would think that after the big win against Carolina that this team was primed for a Super Bowl season. But as 4 straight losses have shown, this team right now is anything but super. With a defense that seems to have put the entire team in the hole every week since week 1 you can see why the offense has struggled. I will be the first to admit that I was impressed with the new defense and new coordinator Bob Slowik that opening night but, the last 4 games have really made wonder why they let Ed Donatel go. Unfortunately someone had to take the fall for the infamous "4th And 26" catastrophe. Now it would seem that the fault was not with Donatel and his system but, with the poor play of the secondary that day. Never has an Ed Donatel defense started the season ranked as poorly as this one has. For proof one only has to look at how much the Atlanta Falcon defense has improved. This is putting pressure on Tom Rossely and the offense to try and play catch up. Brett Favre is one of the greatest Pro football players of all time but, as you can see, even he can only do so much. The fumbling by Ahman Green is forcing Favre into more and more passing situations which is forcing more interceptions. Add in the fact that some of his receivers seem to either forget or give up on their routes and the recipe for the last 4 disasters is obvious.
This leads to what I would call some really UGLY questions. #1. Can Sherman handle the two fisted pressure of being both GM and Head Coach? The answer would appear to be no. No one realized how valuable Mark Hatley was until his untimely death this past spring. It is my opinion that when things on the management side of Sherman''s world started piling up, Hatley would tell him to go work on the game plan and he would take care of things. Mark Hatley was an excellent football man who knew how to work the management side of pro football. I truly beleive he could have handled the McKenzie situation. Instead, Sherman had to try and juggle both hats and that led to hurt feelings and the eventual departure of one of the best cover corners in the league. Question #2. Is the poor start making Favre rethink retirement? One of the things Brett has said in the past is that once the game was no longer fun for him he would go. 4 disheartening losses in a row would make the average 13 year veteran think about taking Sundays off. But Brett is not your average player. Still, a lot has happened to him in the past 2 years. The death of his father Irv. The broken thumb. The bad left shoulder. The loss of his brother-in-law to whom he was very close. And now, the losing. It makes you wonder. There are dozens more questions we could ask and try to answer here but, these 2 are the most important. The answers will be interesting to say the least.
