After serving as the defensive coordinator since 2000, Mike Sherman has relieved Ed Donatell of his duties. In his conversation with the media, Sherman stated it was not the failure of the Packers in the 4th and 26 situation at the end of 4th quarter of the Packers-Eagles game.
Sherman stated that he was involved on the call and this decision was not made on this one play. He said the Packers defense simply did not execute the proper coverage defense that was called.
Sherman stated that this was a difficult decision for him because he felt that Donatell was a loyal coach and done a great job for him. Mike Sherman since the playoff has evaluated the Packer team and thought that the change needed to be made in the best interest of the Green Bay Packers. He thanked Ed Donatell for his contribution to the Packers success for the last few years.
Sherman is going to first interview coaches currently on the Packers staff for the defensive coordinator job. He also is going to look at candidates outside of the Packers organization starting with the upcoming Senior Bowl.
Jeff Jagodzinski has also been relieved of his duties but felt that they could not overcome their philosophical differences. Sherman would not go into details on the specifics of these differences.
