Packers Are Lethargic - Jets Roll

History was made today. Though I was hoping that it would not have happened, the Atlanta Falcons move on in the playoffs as they thrashed our beloved Packers 27-7 in Lambeau field. This was the first playoff loss for the Green Bay Packers in the confines of Lambeau field in the history of the franchise. I have not seen the Packers play this bad at home since before the "Favre" era. The word for this team today was "lethargic." Other than a brief flash during the opening drive of the third quarter that led to the Packers only score, the Packers looked like a team that was tired, beat up, and emotionless. The Cincinnati Bengals could have defeated the Packers tonight. Tonight’s performance confirms my reply to Bill Gallagher’s article "Jets hit Pack with reality" in that the playoffs do decide which teams are good teams. Unfortunately, I have to agree with Bill Gallagher that the Packers did not show that they were an elite team in this NFC wild card playoff game.

Michael Vick showed the world that the 1-3 slump in the Atlanta’s last three games of the regular season was over. He was 13 for 25 for 117 yards with 1 TD using his arm and rushed for 64 yards in 10 attempts. Led by the youngest QB in the NFL, the Atlanta took advantage of the Packer weak rush defense by rushing for 192 yards for one touchdown.

The Falcons also took advantage of another Packer weakness by blocking a Packer punt and returning it for a one yard touchdown. The Packer did not show that they led the league in turnover ratio by losing 3 fumbles to the dominating Falcons.

Mike Sherman has to do some serious work on the Packer run defense and especially the special teams that in the past few years have been strong. Defense and special teams win championships. He has plenty of time to think about and address these two items when he and the rest of the Packers are sitting at home watching the playoffs. Good teams play well on offense, defense (both rushing and passing), and special teams.

Speaking of good teams that are playing well in all the categories, the New York Jets continue to roll by crushing the Indianapolis Colts 41-0. Is Chad Pennington going to be the next Brett Favre? If he continues to play like he is playing now, here comes Chad "Favre." Vinnie who? Pennington was 19 of 25 for 222 yards and 3 TDS. The Jets rushed for a total of 180 yards led by Lamont Jordan who rushed for 102 yards in 20 attempts including 2 TDs. The Jets defense held the Peyton Manning led Indianapolis Colts  to a 176 total net offensive yards. The Jets will advance to meet either Tennessee or Oakland depending on the outcome of the Cleveland – Pittsburgh game tomorrow.
