Titletown strife

That tangled web, the National Football Conference Central Division, gets messier with each passing week. The bottom has become the top - the best have turned into the worst. The joy in the Motor City can only be outdone by the terror in Titletown and the uncertainty in Minnesota.
The first half of the NFL season has surprised even the most informed. This shift in power is only natural, but has taken us all by surprise.
While the Redskins continue to pile up the points in the East Division and the Rams control the West, the biggest switch has been in the Central Division.
Detroit is enjoying its week on top after throttling Tampa Bay last Sunday and Minnesota appears to be regaining its swagger, while the Bears are licking major wounds inflicted during their breakdown in Washington.
And then there is Green Bay. What has happened there is beyond belief - not necessarily to the team - but its leaders. Brett Favre has always played the game like a kid, but his decisions to throw into double coverage with such frequency has all of Packerdom shaking its head.
Many blame Ray Rhodes, pointing to his poor record as a head coach and his seemingly hands-off approach to Favre. The team has not shown the offensive firepower that it has had in the recent past and the defense has been inconsistent and awkwardly soft.
Others blame Favre. After all, Rhodes isn't the one playing the game. In two of their last three games, Favre has been undisciplined and hesitant and only the fine running of Dorsey Levens has been able to save them - and that was only in the game against San Diego when he dominated the second half.
Others point to the losses of Reggie White, Robert Brooks, Adam Timmerman, Mark Chmura, and now Brian Williams as keys to the team's inconsistencies.
While the loss of key players may have an impact, it's a laughable excuse. Every team loses players through injury, retirement, and free agency. The key to winning in the NFL today is bringing in players who can replace the missing.
Both Rhodes and Favre need to prove themselves, not only to the faithful, but to themselves, their colleagues, and teammates with a convincing win over the very beatable Bears.
Rhodes needs to light a fire under this team. He needs to prove he is a master motivator, as so many claim he is, and he needs, most importantly, to reign in Favre.
The quarterback has been out of control, playing his own schoolyard football, and letting everyone down in the process. Many beg to question Rhodes' ability to work with Favre. Is he intimidated by the three-time MVP and Super Bowl quarterback? Is he letting Favre run his own show?
Championship teams do not have offensive linemen thrown out of games. Teams succeed because they have a quarterback who plays the game within the parameters of a plan and win championships with a defense that actually defends and punishes the opposition.
Over the next nine weeks this team will gain an identity, not only among the fan base, but within the NFL. Will it be known as a team without leadership and commitment - a rudderless ship lost at sea? Or will it be known as a team that rebounded with a renewed fervor and vision?
Rhodes and Favre will both play huge roles - whatever direction the team eventually takes. It will be up to them to lead a team that helps to hold off the power shift in the Central Division.
Whether they are able to strangle the strife they have created in Titletown will be the key to a productive second half.
How they actually do it will be even more interesting.
