In a game that most experts picked as a Patriot win turned out to be a rout by the very injury depleted Packers 28-10 in Foxboro. In order to have some sort of defensive backfield to replace Darren Sharper, Antaun Edwards, Bwahoh Jue,and Mike McKenzie Green Bay signed 6 year veteran Bryant Westbrook off waivers from the Cowboys. Also they promoted Erwin Swinney and Todd Franz from the practice squad. Westbrook paid immediate dividends as he intercepted Tom Brady as the Pats were driving in Green Bay territory.Franz didn't look too bad either as he made sure tackles and no mental mistakes. Even Swinney didn't make any of the bonehead gaffes he made in Pre-season. Considering what they were up against with all the injuries plus having to play the defending Super Bowl champs at Foxboro ,after a very emotional road victory against Da Bears, the entire defense deserves game balls.Especially Defensive coordinator Ed Donatell and defensive backs coach Bob Slowik. These two guys did an amazing job getting basically a whole new defense installed for this game. When you have to replace 5 starters and STILL can get that kind of performance all I could think to say was "WOW!!!!.And what about rookie db Marcus Anderson? He made another great interception and defended his position very well. I also liked putting wr Javon Walker in the defensive backfield on the last play of the first half. That's an awful BIG target to try and throw over.
Now on to the offense where ,according to the Fox broadcast crew, Brett Favre seems to be on his way to a 4th MVP award.Favre was a very pedestrian 17-27 for 147 yds but, he had 3 td passes and NO INTERCEPTIONS!!! Ahman Green rushed for 136 yds on 31 carries and 1 rushing td to go along with the 9yd td pass he caught giving Favre 300 (at that time). Favre went on to get td pass #301 to tight end Bubba Franks. If this team can get this kind of victory with all the injuries and new faces in the line-up this could turn out to be a SUPER year.
And now on to the "sorry" part of this article. Because I had to work 2nd shift last week I couldn't watch the victory over "DA BEARS" although I heard most of the game on the radio. I had a very hectic work week and could't find the time to write last week and to all of you who read my column I give you all a very heartfelt apology for that. I know I'm not the greatest writer in the world but from the feedback I get I must be doing something right. This might happen again after the Miami game so bear with me. At least you get to watch. But remember this all you fellow 2nd shifters, it is better to listen to a Packer victory than watch a Packer loss. Peace to you all and have a great week.
