The biggest statement

The Cowboys against the Redskins? The Pats against the Broncos? The Vikings against the 49ers? Were those the biggest games of the National Football League's seventh week?
No, nyet, nawww... not even close. Look to the mauling the Green Bay Packers gave the San Diego Chargers yesterday in the land of fruits and nuts. Now there was a statement.
The 28-3 pasting the Packers laid on the Chargers put the rest of the League on notice that Brett Favre is still the best quarterback in the game, that head coach Ray Rhodes can still motivate, and, most importantly, that the team isn't about to roll over and die anytime soon.
"We laid an egg a week ago and everyone on this team was challenged to play the type of football that's acceptable," coach Rhodes was quoted as saying in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
"Laying an egg" may have been much of an understatement from the coach, but if turning water into wine or even walking on water could have been on the agenda for the day, Rhodes may have been able to do that too on this glorious Sunday in Southern California.
In front of the biggest crowd ever at Qualcomm Stadium, Rhodes had his team ready to play - and play they did - taking advantage of every opportunity presented.
The first big play came on the part of the defense which allowed the Charger offense to move efficiently up and down the field in the first half.
However, when Mike McKenzie stepped in front of an Erik Kramer pass in the end zone to snuff their first impressive drive of the game, the route was on.
The Packers then went 80 yards for the game's first touchdown. During the drive Antonio Freeman caught a long pass down the middle, Bill Schroeder caught a beautiful sideline pass, and Tyrone Davis gathered in a catch inside the 10-yard line to give the Packers a first and goal.
The first touchdown came off a play with an unusual wrinkle. Dorsey Levens lined up wide right and came in motion back to the left. When the ball was snapped, Favre made a great fake to Levens sweeping left and then pitched the ball into the right flat to William Henderson, who powered in from seven yards out for the score.
From that point, it was to be all Packers even though the Chargers would move the ball deep into Green Bay territory three more times in the game.
The Chargers' next possession ended abruptly when Kramer threw right to rookie cornerback Fred Vinson, who caught the second of the team's six interceptions.
After Favre passed 16 yards to Antonio Freeman, Green Bay picked up a pass interference call inside the 10-yard line, giving the Packers a first down at the six.
From there, Dorsey Levens became just the second runner this season to find the end zone against the active and highly praised Charger defense to give the Packers a 14-0 lead.
San Diego punted on their next series as the Packer defense stuffed the Chargers. Favre threw his only interception of the day on a long pass, setting up one of the more interesting Charger possessions.
During the ensuing drive, the Chargers fumbled once, and eventually faced a third down and three, before having their run attempt stuffed by linebacker Brian Williams to set up a 44-yard field goal attempt.
The kick was good, but the Packers Vinson had jumped offside, giving the Chargers new life and a first down. They wiped the points off the board and went three more plays before the Packer defense again stopped them on third down.
However, it was the next play which caused the most consternation for coach Rhodes - a play which prevented Green Bay from pitching a shutout.
On the field goal try, which sailed outside the left upright, Packer linebacker Bernardo Harris was called for illegally using his linemen while jumping to block the attempt, but replays clearly showed he jumped vertically, only using his hand to protect himself when falling.
The call stood despite Rhodes' protest, giving the Chargers yet another first down.
Following a one-yard run, and two incompletions, the Chargers tried their third field goal of the drive, this time connecting to make the score 14-3.
The Packer defense had made their biggest statement of the day, giving them the confidence they would need to snuff out the Chargers on other advances toward the goal line.
After Favre was sacked on third down, the Chargers got the ball back again with just under three minutes left in the half. Again, San Diego moved the ball down the field, converting a fourth down play to set them up near the 10-yard line with less than 10 seconds to play.
Acting like a rookie instead of the veteran that he is, Kramer elected to try to score on a scramble instead of throwing the ball away to set up a field goal and the clock ran out when he couldn't get out of bounds. Again, the Packer defense had risen to stop the Chargers when they needed to do so.
In the second half, Dorsey Levens and the 20,000 plus Packer fans in attendance took over.
Green Bay made it 21-3 when Corey Bradford was interfered with on a 44-yard pass play inside the Chargers' 10-yard line. From the six-yard line, Favre threw a bullet into the back of the end zone that was snared by Bill Schroeder for the score.
It was Green Bay's next possession which nailed the coffin shut. After Tyrone Williams saved a touchdown with an interception at the one-yard line, Levens took over.
Held to just eight yards rushing in the first half, Levens was the workhorse in the impressive 99-yard touchdown drive. He ran for over 60 yards during that third quarter drive and also picked up 25 yards on a swing pass and nifty run down the left sideline, helping the Packers put the game away with their final touchdown of the day - a diving catch in the front of the end zone by Antonio Freeman.
"I played just like I did last week. But I'm sure people will say that it sure didn't look like it. I don't know if I was any more anxious than I always am. As I said last week, if you play in this league long enough, you'll have games where you can't do anything," Favre said after the game.
On the other side of the field, first-year Charger coach Mike Riley said "That was a long day at the office. That was very disappointing in a big ball game, to not be in it and cause it yourself."
However, it was Chargers' star and motivational leader Junior Seau who said it most succinctly, "They are a great team."
The spanking the Packers gave to the highly regarded Chargers on their home field has set up high drama for next Monday night when the Packers will host former head coach Mike Holmgren and his Seattle Seahawks in the most anticipated game of the season.
Almost as interesting as the final outcome will be the reception that Holmgren receives from his former legions of fans in Green Bay.
So forget that the Rams are 6-0, that the Cowboys outlasted the Redskins, that the Vikings drilled the 49ers, that the Pats got by the Broncos. The roller coaster in Green Bay has again hit its height and, without question, the Packers have made the biggest statement in the league - a statement that may even give them the inside track for a divisional championship.
"I never doubted our team. It was a tough loss last week, but we came back this week and showed them. We used last week as a stepping stone, as motivation to get back on track," wide receiver Antonio Freeman said. The challenge continues next week.
