The release of Dorsey Levens is understandable. Dorsey has always been a team player for the Packers. He is the fourth-ranking rusher in Packers history (3,937 yards) - behind Jim Taylor (8,207), John Brockington (5,024) and Tony Canadeo (4,197). He has suffered some injuries since his tremendous season in 1996 that helped lead the Packers to the Super Bowl. He has accepted the second string role behind Ahman Green. At 31, I can understand why he wants a starting role with another team. I am glad to hear that Mike Sherman has an open door policy with Levens. I hope he plays his final years in Green Bay. I wish the best of luck to Dorsey regarding a possible future starting position with another team.
I have a soft spot for the Bernardo Harris. He, like me, is graduate of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Bernardo who is 30 years old has been a strong contributor to the Packers for many seasons. He led the team in tackles (130, 81 solo) in 2001 for the fourth time in the last five years. I am not quite sure I agree with this decision. It could be mainly a money issue for the Packers. Sherman is trying to look to the future and bring along younger players with a lower price tag. That is the nature of the NFL.
Santana Dotson is another member of the 1996 Super Bowl championship teams. This 10 year veteran has been one the leaders of the Packer’s defensive line. I think his release could be another money and age (he is 32) decision.
Here are this years draft Picks for the coming year.
Round 1 – 28 Pick Overall
Round 2 – 59 Pick Overall
Round 3 – 92 Pick Overall.
I think that Mike Sherman is looking to keep the Packers a younger less expensive team. I hope he also realizes that veteran players help to bring the younger players up to speed. A mix is what brings championships.
